Your Guide to Cinco de Mayo 2021 to enjoy with your friends

While Cinco de Mayo officially celebrates the 1862 Mexican army’s victory over the French, it’s become a holiday that people across the world celebrate. Typically, most people would spend the day eating at Mexican restaurants, downing margaritas and throwing parties — but in these unprecedented times, we’re having to adjust how we celebrate.

Luckily, there are so many virtual Cinco de Mayo ideas you can use to have a fun fiesta at home this year or safely with limited people. There are still ways to support your local Mexican-owned businesses, have fun with friends and loved ones and — of course — eat and drink your heart out. Cinco de Mayo looks a little different in 2021, but we’re still ready to celebrate.

Holidays are meant to bring people together, so let’s do that with Cinco de Mayo this year. To help you have a fun celebration at home or at a small get-together, we rounded up some easy Cinco de Mayo recipes to share with your friends and family on Zoom or in-person.

Volcan Blanco Tequila

Volcan De Mi Tierra Tequila is not just a drink, at its heart, it’s a Mexican heritage that inspires us to let our passion become our purpose in life. Tequila Blanco blends its herbal, citrus, and spice notes indicative of the lowlands with fruit notes of cherry, pear, and peach from the highlands.

Altos Plata

Altos Plata is recognized for its natural smoothness when sipped, and is a top choice tequila for margaritas by bartenders. Plata offers the herbal aroma of steamed agave and is sweet to the mouth with citrus notes like lime and lemon. If you’re going with a fruit margarita, it tends to pair better with mild and sweeter foods, so you couldn’t go wrong with a fruit salad or a dessert like a flan or sorbet. If you’re going with a frozen margarita, a spicier dish will actually compliment the milder flavors, so try fajitas or tamales.

Avión Reserva 44 Extra Añejo

Avión Reserva 44 Extra Añejo is placed in oak barrels for 44 months — 43 of those months are spent in traditional oak barrels, and the final month is spent in “petite” oak barrels which are rotated daily. As a result, The tequila has a deep aroma of roasted agave, along with scents of vanilla and light citrus, particularly lemon zest. The nose gives way to flavors of dried fruits, cinnamon, and eucalyptus on the palate, which leads to an extremely long and rich finish. Anejos tequilas go great with luxurious, flavorful desserts like churros, Creme Brulee or something as simple as frozen peaches or dark chocolate.

Los Arango Tequila

Originally crafted to honor Jose Doroteo Arango, better known as Pancho Villa, for defending his people against the tyrants in the Mexican Revolution, Los Arango was born in his family name. Today, we continue to honor this triumphant moment in Mexican history throughout every batch of Los Arango tequila.

It is made from 100% Blue Weber Agave, harvested just steps away from the Hacienda Corralejo where it’s fired in clay ovens and fermented with a specialty yeast strain. It’s then double distilled, bottled in blown glass, and hand-finished with premium leather, metal, and wood accents all onsite at the Hacienda. Los Arango’s line of authentic offerings includes Blanco ($45.99), Reposado ($50) and Ańejo ($62).

Tropical Chamoy Michelada

Estrella Jalisco, the Mexican beer becoming a favorite among cerveza aficionados, is introducing a flavorful twist on the classic Michelada just in time for the outdoor dining boom.

The new Tropical Chamoy Michelada is a traditional lager featuring a 3.5% ABV and a flavorful blend of clamato, chamoy and pineapple. Fun fact: it’s the first ready-to-drink beverage in the U.S. to use chamoy!

As you may know, chamoy is a distinctly Mexican flavor that is widely loved, but hard to describe. The term doesn’t even have an official definition! That’s why with the launch of Tropical Chamoy Michelada, Estrella Jalisco is embarking on a mission to define the sweet-salty-spicy-sour flavor once and for all — and give chamoy the recognition it deserves.

Fans are invited to sign Estrella Jalisco’s petition asking Merriam-Webster to add chamoy to the dictionary. Visit change.org/definechamoy to join us in adding some flavor to the dictionary!
