Food is GREAT Celebrated ‘British Spirits and Sparkling Wine Week’ Showcasing The Best the UK has to Offer the United States
The quality, diversity and success of British spirits and sparkling wines were toasted during “British Spirits and Sparkling Wine Week,” in New York Monday, October 22 through Sunday, October 28 presented by the UK government’s Food is GREAT Campaign led by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Department for International Trade.
From whisky and English Sparkling Wine doughnuts created in partnership with The Doughnut Project; gin ice cream developed in partnership with Tipsy Scoop; and the city’s top bartenders creating bespoke cocktails, everyone was able to sample the best that Britain has to offer. With a rich and storied heritage, the United Kingdom is the fastest growing supplier of spirits to the United States.
Whisky is the largest food and drink global export for the United Kingdom. British gin exports have seen a meteoric rise in the last five years, and the United States is largest export market for both British Gin and English Sparkling Wine with an approximate equivalent value of over $261 million (£200m).
“We’re thrilled to have hosted the best of British Spirits and Sparkling Wine in New York. The week reinforces the strength of this industry in the United Kingdom and showcases UK food and drink to the world. I look forward to seeing these companies continue to expand into the United States and beyond,” said Laura Hickey, Deputy Consul General for the British Consulate General New York.
