Exclusive first look at the new MM6 Maison Margiela PF19 Collection
The Autumn-Winter 2019 pre-collection continues the evolution of the MM6 Maison Margiela wardrobe for women. Experimenting with silhouette and form, focus is placed on the execution of abstract ideas with a new, modern wearability. This duality reverberates strongly throughout the entire line, which encompasses ready-to-wear, accessories, footwear and jewelry.
The concept of letters as garments becomes a key theme. Taking the form of identifiable items — a dress, jumpsuit or denim two-piece — graphic lines become letters. ‘M-A-R-G-I-E-L-A-6’ can be read out. Rhythm and language is created, as the parallels between the recognizable and the unfamiliar is explored.
Reflecting the beauty of an urban environment, the pre-collection is composed of an everyday and familiar colour palette, juxtaposed with bold and instructional tones — post-it-note yellow, road sign orange and metallic blue. This also translates into the eclectic feeling of the diverse fabrications, consisting of lurex, mohair, lace, leather, polyester and tweed.
Tailoring is approached with the same non-conformist spirit. Imbued with the attitude of the house, suiting, jackets and waistcoats take on an ultra-modern and youthful ease, rejecting traditional notions. Dresses take on similar hybrid forms. Sometimes masculine, with over-sized jacket pocket detailing, other times more feminine in sheer lace or crushed velvet.
Designed to be worn multilayered, the individual wearer is invited to experiment and create their own uniform. Another classic wardrobe staple is remixed this season: the peacoat jacket. This time, buttons are removed and replaced with electric blue tape.
