Florida isn’t typically the first destination on people’s minds during the summer months, though it can be a great option for those who want to avoid crowds and still soak up the sun in a tropical locale — especially in the less-explored cities like St. Petersburg. We’ve outlined a few ways St. Pete has vacationers covered should they consider traveling to the Sunshine State this time of year below.

Less crowds and lower rates

Florida hotels in August and September maintain lower occupancy than the rest of the year, and therefore also have lower rates. The Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club has a couple summer packages that can help visitors save even more. The $50 Nightly Resort Credit package can be used at the resort’s spa, three restaurants or championship golf club.

World-class art exhibitions

Through summer, St. Petersburg’s Imagine Museum has American artist Karen LaMonte’s kimono study works on view, while the architecturally remarkable James Museum has a very timely Environmental Impact II exhibition that includes works on global warming and the Gulf oil spill.

Flourishing food and beer scene

Travelers who visit this summer can be some of the first to experience the newest spots within St. Pete’s already thriving dining and drinking scene. Some new favorites include Baba on Central, a modern Mediterranean spot within the Grand Central District, and The Big Catch at Salt Creek, which brings a vibe of “old St. Pete” back to the city. Beer connoisseurs can hone their taste buds at one of the many local breweries, like 3 Daughters and Green Bench.
